The pretty cathedral city of Ripon in North Yorkshire is a popular wedding destination for those seeking a location steeped in fascinating history, and interesting connections. From its bustling market place and range of local museums, to its imposing cathedral church and outlying areas; the influence of the Viking, Norman, Tudor, Plantagenet, and Restoration eras can still be seen.
Across the vast North Yorkshire vistas surrounding Ripon, the complimentary relationship between rural life, village life, and city life also remains visible. Ancient monuments, like Fountains Abbey, sit nestled among busy farmsteads, outside of picturesque clusters of family homes. Indeed, the city limits of Ripon even encompass a small part of the Nidderdale Area of Natural Beauty – such is the majesty of this landscape. One spot that successfully marries all of these elements together is the renowned wedding venue, Thief Hall.
Created by former professional show jumper, Jessica Barker, and her husband Phillip, Thief Hall is among the very best of the wedding venues that the Ripon area has to offer. As a lovingly renovated North Yorkshire sheep barn conversion making it the ideal Barn Wedding Venue near Ripon. The hall opened in 2015, having been developed for the specific purpose of providing couples with a blank canvas, upon which their dream wedding can be designed. The interior benefits from a clean and modern look, while original features with open beams have been retained. This means that the venue is all ready for the betrothed couple to apply their own, personal stamp, ready for the big day.
A barn wedding at Thief Hall comes packed with features, including:
- Exclusive use of the entire venue for three days;
- Space for civil ceremonies;
- Tables, chairs, linens, and more;
- A fully stocked and staffed bar;
- No restrictions.
In addition to the stunning barn wedding venue itself, Thief Hall also provides two nights of on-site accommodation for 26+ guests, across six beautifully designed, five-star, self-catering, luxury cottages. Each cottage has its own hot tub, and benefits from Thief Hall’s crowning glory: its unique location. Set on a hill in the historic village of Thornton-Le-Moor, Thief Hall provides panoramic views across the classic North Yorkshire countryside – ensuring that wedding parties and overnight guests alike will be truly swept away by the romance of the occasion. Sitting on the terrace at Thief Hall, it is difficult to imagine the building in its original guise – as a functional sheep barn – such is the detailed way in which the property has been designed and renovated, to take full advantage of its location near Ripon.
Such a vantage point means the area, along with all of its historical connections, will be fully captured by photography during any wedding, while the Thief Hall ‘no restrictions’ policy means the North Yorkshire backdrop can blend seamlessly with the unique atmosphere created by the happy couple. There are no finish times to which parties must adhere, and no end to the thematic possibilities of the rooms. For those that might prefer an outdoor event, these can also be accommodated, and marquees are permitted on the site.
The dedicated team behind Thief Hall – led by owner Jessica Barker – is, in itself, one of the best features of this Ripon area wedding venue. With years of event management experience between them, couples can rest comfortably in the knowledge that the stewardship of their special day is in the safest of hands. The emphasis here is on delivering a fun, welcoming atmosphere, with the ambition to help couples achieve the ceremony and celebrations for which they have been hoping. Whether the dream wedding is an indoor shindig, or an outdoor affair – or even a combination of the two - creativity is undoubtedly the order of day. No request is too big, or too unusual for Thief Hall, and this team work to ensure that the planning process is as much of a memory to treasure as the wedding day itself.
The Wider Area
For a city that is the third-smallest in England, and the smallest in Yorkshire in terms of population, Ripon certainly does deliver - in romance, and in dramatic, historical connections. It was the first Church of England diocese to be created after the period of upheaval that was the English Reformation, and its locally held status was officially unified with public recognition by the parliamentary City of Ripon Act, back in 1865. These twin ideas of change and partnership are symbolised in the city, by the natural confluence of the rivers Laver and Skell – the latter of which feeds into the mighty River Ure as it stretches away to the south, across the region. In this regard, Thief Hall is the perfectly complements the area.
Such is its popularity as a beautiful wedding destination, the Ripon area also boasts an abundance of local wedding suppliers, too. From caterers to florists, from entertainment to photography – there are many highly experienced and talented wedding providers in the region, from whom couples can choose - and the Thief Hall team are always happy to advise where needed. This air of connectivity continues, with the area being easily accessible by train and road from others parts of the country, and Thief Hall itself being easily accessible from nearby towns of Ripon and Northallerton. Indeed, the village of Thornton-Le-Moor is situated very closely to the A168, which was historically popular as a main route – firstly from London to Edinburgh, and latterly as a road from York to Edinburgh. Today, the proximity of Thornton-Le-Moor to the A168 simply means that Thief Hall can be quickly reached from modern main routes, such as the A1, and the East Coast Main Line railway services at Northallerton.
Now in its 11th year, Thief Hall remains unique in the service it provides to couples planning their nuptials. With the stunning location, the ‘blank canvas’ décor, the ‘no restrictions’ policy, the experienced team, and the luxury accommodation included, it really is a self-contained wedding dream. Its popularity means that booking early is positively encouraged. Beyond that, all that is needed is imagination.
