York is among the most historically significant cities of Yorkshire and has, since its founding by Romans in 71 AD, been the site of great conflict between both the north and south of Britain, and between Britain and Europe, too. Such events have created a rich legacy of famous landmarks, all within the reach of this majestic North Yorkshire city. The areas of many of these famous spots can be seen from the terraces of Thief Hall.
The most famous York landmark of all is undoubtedly the Gothic cathedral of York Minster, which dominates the area, and is the second largest of its kind in northern Europe. The immense size of the building is the result of its construction being completed slowly, over the course of more than two centuries. As a consequence, the cathedral is unique in that its design encompasses every aspect of the Gothic style, as it evolved.
Its ambition stems from the fact that it dates to a period in which the city of York was the most economically, politically, and religiously influential settlement in the north of England. The spot upon which York Minster sits has seen many important events – beginning with the construction of a wooden chapel for the baptism of King Edward of Northumbria in 627, and including the proclamation of Constantine the Great as Roman Emperor in 306 AD. But, these are not the only claims to fame that York holds. This area is also the birth-place of, W.H Auden, Joseph Rowntree, Frankie Howerd, Dame Judi Dench, Guy Fawkes, and of the well-loved wedding venue known as Thief Hall.
Unusual wedding venues
Being a larger city that is filled with tourist attractions and destinations, York boasts a wide range of wedding venues that are out of the ordinary, and which would appeal to couples seeking to plan a more unusual event. Few fit that bill as perfectly as Thief Hall though, since it combines a fascinating North Yorkshire history, a stunning location, and a comprehensively maintained ‘no restrictions’ policy.
Created by former show jumper, Jessica Barker, and her husband, Phillip, Thief Hall burst onto the wedding venue scene in 2015, following the ambitious and challenging conversion of the property’s sheep barn. Thoroughly modernised, while retaining original rustic features – including open beams – Thief Hall is now purposefully presented as a ‘blank canvas’ wedding venue. This means that couples are encouraged to approach it with creativity and imagination, to design their ideal, dream wedding. Without restrictions or stipulations, this makes the planning process as memorable as the special day itself – something upon which the Thief Hall team prides itself in ensuring.
As a family business, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming – something which creates the perfect ambience for the accommodation aspect of the venue. Thief Hall boasts six luxury, five-star self-catering cottages on-site, and can therefore host over 26 guests for a two night stay, as part of the three day exclusive use of the venue, included in any wedding booking.
Also included is:
- Rooms in which civil ceremonies can be held;
- Outdoor wedding options;
- A fully stocked and staffed bar;
- Tables, chairs, linens, and more;
- Wedding planning support throughout the process, with coordination on the day.
With so many years of event management experience between them, Jessica Barker and her team are able to ensure the safe stewardship of any wedding – including working with the local suppliers of choice. This extends to catering, which means couples have the freedom to enjoy any cuisine, and any meal structure that they desire – whether that be a traditional three course meal, an informal hog-roast, or even food supplied by favourite street vans on site. Thief Hall will happily support all of the wishes of the betrothed couple, while providing a wealth of knowledge and experience.
A marriage of geography and history
The York area was always destined for national significance, thanks to its geography – and geography is very important to Thief Hall. It is situated on a hill in the historic village of Thornton-Le-Moor, and enjoys panoramic views right across the Vale of York – with all of its rolling countryside, towns and villages. Just as the settlement of the City of York occurred at the confluence of the Rivers Foss and Ouse due to the strategic advantage this afforded the people defending the site, so it is possible to sit upon the terraces of Thief Hall – or even relax in one of the hot tubs associated with the cottages on-site – and spot all the other strategically positioned villages and their rivers.
The views from Thief Hall are indeed breathtaking in their scope, and fascinating in their detail – and they constitute one of the many jewels in the crown of this exceptional venue. The opportunities for particularly beautiful wedding photographs are truly endless here - with the geography and history of the York area becoming the epic backdrop for events that are entirely unique and personal. So wide are the views, and so large the sky that no two days are the same at Thief Hall. The light is constantly changing as clouds wind their way lazily across the valley, which means that, even if you strike a pose in the same spot as a previous wedding, the final image will be entirely yours.
While the centre of the City of York has, since Roman times, been encircled by imposing city walls which today make for a great tourist attraction, Thief Hall has no such impediment. Here, the openness of its owners is reflected in the openness of its location. Not only is it surrounded by open countryside, it is also easily accessible by road – with the A1, A19, and A168 all running close by – and by the East Coast Main Line train services through Northallerton. This makes Thief Hall the ideal choice for couples travelling to their wedding destination from elsewhere in the country, or indeed for those with guests doing the same. On a day when the presence of loved ones from near and far is of the utmost importance, Thief Hall is ready to welcome all, and accommodate all in its luxurious, and awe-inspiring setting.
